Great Sand Dunes Oasis Campground has a lodge, cabins, tenting, Group, and RV camp spots.  The campground is seasonal being open from April through November.  20 full hookup camp spots are available located at an altitude of 8,100 feet.  These are the only full hookup camp spots in the area near the Great Sand Dunes National Park.  The campground is located just three miles outside the Great Sand Dunes National Park.  Additional services are available 38 miles away in the small town of Alamosa.  The small town of Alamosa has all the essential services available.  During the Campbase visit in late April it snowed overnight and the wind was constant.  The conditions were not the best for tenting.  If you will be tenting, Campbase recommends July or August for visiting the park.

Black bears sometimes visit the campground.  Please store your food appropriately.

The sand dunes at the national park are located on the far side of Medano Creek.  They are known as the tallest sand dunes in America.  To access the dunes you will need to cross Medano Creek.  It's a very shallow creek, usually not much deeper than knee deep.  It's a mountain fed stream so, it can be very cold water.  Once Across the stream you have access to the entire sand dune.  Off roading on the dunes is not allowed so, you will need to walk or climb up the sandy slopes.  Please see the Campbase photos tab for pictures of the dunes.

There is much more to this national park than just sand dunes.  Medano Creek is popular for skim boarding and tubing.  It's a great spot to cool off during the summer months.  The creek usually dries up by August or September.

Medano Pass is another area of the park worthy of exploring.  The pass leads into the mountains away from the dunes.  The pass is great for off road vehicles.  There are also 21 primitive camp spots in the pass.
