Description

California, Headquarters Campground, Sequoia National Forest.  The campground is located six miles north of Kernville on the Sierra Highway.

Directions:

Located off Highway 99, take Highway 178 East, to Lake Isabella.  From Lake Isabella take Highway 155 around the west side of the lake to the town of Kernville.  From Kernville go north on Sierra Way (Mountain 99) 6 miles to the campground.

Comment

Headquarters Campground has just 43 tent and small RV camp spots.  No RV's over 27 feet.  The campground is located on the Kern River at 2600 feet and is open year around.  Waterfront camp spots are available.  Reservations can be made through www.recreation.gov.  Other camp spots are first-come, first-served.  There are bears in the area of the campground and bear boxes are available at some camp spots.   Most spots have shade trees, picnic tables, and a fire ring.  Vault toilets are also available.  The town of Kernville is just six miles to the south of the campground.  Kernville has all the essential services including fuel, markets, and restaurants.

Local Recreation:
 
Road touring and sightseeing are popular in Kernville and the Sequoia National Forest on the Sierra Highway.
 
Boating and fishing on Lake Isabella.  Lake levels are low due to the California drought but, fishing is still great.  With all the trees in the water, water skiing is not recommended.  
 
The Kern River is located next to the campground.  Rafting, tubing, and fly fishing are popular on the Kern River.  There are several adventure outfitters nearby in Kernville.  Fly fishing guides are also available.  Kernville also has several restaurants and souvenir shops.
