Description

California, Observatory Campground, in the Cleveland National Forest is also called Mount Palomar Observatory Campground.  The campground is located on highway S6 at Mount Palomar approximately one mile south of the observatory. 

Direction:
The closest address to the campground is 35899 Canfield Road, Palomar Mountain, California. The campground is about 2 miles north of this address along Canfield Road.
 
From Los Angeles, California, drive south on I-15 to State Highway 76. Go east on 76 for approximately 20 miles and turn left onto South Grade Road (County Road S6). Follow to the top of Palomar Mountain. Once at the top, turn left to continue on South Grade Road/Canfield Road. Continue for approximately 2.5 miles and turn right into the campground.

Comment

Observatory Campground has 36 tent or RV camp spots.  The campground is seasonal closing in December and reopening in March.  Maximum length camp spot is 35 feet.  Campbase recommends RV's no larger than 27 feet, because of the winding road to the campground.  The campground is on the top of Palomar Mountain.  The road to the top is winding and steep at times.  Campers are drawn to Observatory Campground for its proximity to the Palomar Observatory, a world-class center of astronomy research operated by the California Institute of Technology.  The campground is just two miles from the observatory.  Night sky's are amazing. 

The campground is seasonal being open from April to December.  Camp spots are reservable at Reserve America.  Some camp spots are available first-come, first-served.

There are mountain lions and poisonous snakes in the area.

Ice and firewood are available at the grocery store just two miles south on highwas S6.  Fuel is not available on the mountain.

Local Recreation:

Star gazing is the most popular activity from this campground.  Make sure you bring a telescope. 

Mothers Kitchen Restaurant is approximately two mile from the campground.

There are numerous hiking trails near the campground.

Road touring and road biking are popular on mountain roads near the campground.

Mount Palomar Observatory is open to the public and is located just two miles north of the campground.

Pala Casino is located approximately 15 miles south of the campground.  This is a large casino with approximately 10 restaurants.  

Warning:  There are ticks in this area.  Ticks can carry Lime Desease.  Please use precautions.  There is also a Plague warning for this area.
