7 Must Know Camping Tips for Beginners

Camping can be loads of fun, although for first timers it can be a bit of a challenge. For anyone in this position, it’s great to receive some friendly advice and have a handfulof tips to see them on their way and make their first time as enjoyable as it can be without being too stressful.

Here are 7 tips to help any newbie camper on their way to some fun nights under the stars:

1. Research Where You Are Going

The U.S.A is pretty darn big and has a multitude of camping environments. With this in mind, it’s essential to research the area where you’re going and what your first camping trip might entail.

Some of the things you need to know as a beginner is the place you are going, and what amenities the campsite has. This should be followed by any local transport and the availability of food in the area as well as clean, fresh water.

10 to 15 minutes research on the internet is more than enough to find out all the answers you need.

2. Check Your Equipment

There are two reasons new campers should check all of their equipment before leaving home. Firstly, if you have purchased new equipment, you need to be familiar with your new items.

Second, if you have borrowed gear until you get your own, it might not have been used for a while. Tents can wear, and no one wants to find they’ve sprung a leak in a sudden downpour.

If you’re using a gas stove, these can be tricky if you’ve never used one, and when meal time comes around, it’s nice to be able to have a hot plate of something when you’re hungry.

3. Quality Product

This follows on from the previous item. If you’ve purchased new gear and you’re serious about camping its worth a bit of an extra cost to buy quality rather than skimping on the cost to save a few dollars. Cheaper products for one won’t last as long and definitely won’t perform as well when in use.

It might appear to be an added expense, but buying cheaper is undoubtedly a false economy.

4. Campfires and How to Use Them

One of the best feelings when camping is sat around the campfire eating S’mores and telling ghost stories. Unfortunately, campfires need some experience to build one and make sure it remains controlled and is something a beginner might not know how to do.

Before you leave, it’s worth asking an experienced person to give you some tips. With a gust of wind a campfire can quickly get out of hand and can cause damage to tents, the environment or injury to an individual can happen just as fast.

5. Buying Light

Many campsites allow for vehicle parking, although there are many good ones which require a short trek from the main road before you hit the main site.

When you look to purchase equipment, you need to check the weight as trudging backward, and forward isn’t anyone’s sense of fun when carrying heavy equipment.

There is also the instance of, only take what you need for your trip. Items which are big and bulky are often unnecessary. These cumbersome items are best left at home where they belong.

6. Being Comfortable

Camping can be one of the most fun activities anyone, or any family can undertake for a weekend.

On the other hand, it can provide you with a nightmare if one fundamental thing hasn’t been taken into consideration especially if children are concerned.

Bedding is crucial on any campers camping list, and this isn’t just the blanket covering you. If you haven’t got something to put on the floor which protects you from the earth’s bumps and undulations, the cold can get you. As well as that, a good blanket or sleeping bag is a necessity to keep those night chills at bay.

As an aside to bedding, suitable clothes is another must. One shower of rain can leave you without appropriatethings to wear. Make sure you have enough, and most of all, make sure they stay dry.

7. Garbage

After all the fun and all the campfire meals the trash needs taking out. For beginner campers, you might not know the impact garbage has around a campsite.

Poly bags are a necessity as there are many animals which come out at night looking for food and one sniff of a leftover barbecued chicken wind, and they’ll be tearing through your garbage to find those delicious leftovers.

If your campsite doesn’t have anywhere to throw garbage on an evening, make sure it is all secure and in a location where these hungry critters can’t reach it.  Many campgrounds are pack-it-in, pack-it-out and don’t have trash receptacles.
