Description

Texas, Chisos Basin Campground Big Bend National Park(BBNP).

The nearest freeway to the national park is Interstate-10 located 100 miles north of the entrance on Highway-385.  BBNP is an extremely remote park.  100 miles into the park plus an additional 50 miles to the closest Campground.  Make sure your vehicle is in perfect operation before entering this area.  Also, gas stations in the area are far and few in between.  Make sure you have sufficient fuel when entering this remote area. 

Directions:

From Interstate 10, take highway 385 south to Fort Stockton and then on to Marathon. From Marathon, go 40 miles south on Highway 385 to the north entrance of Big Bend National Park. Drive straight 26 miles to Park Headquarters at Panther Junction. Turn right and drive for three miles. Turn left at the Basin sign and go seven miles to the campground.

Chisos Basin Campground, Big Bend National Park, perched high in the rugged Chisos Mountains, is one of the most sought-after campgrounds in Big Bend National Park. At an altitude of 5,400 ft., it is surrounded on all sides by tall, rocky cliffs.  The best time of year to visit the park is in the fall, winter, or spring.  Summer temperatures tend to be to extreme.  Thanksgiving and Christmas are the two busiest weekends of the year in the park.  The park is open all year with RV and tent camp spots available.  The campground can accommodate RV's up to 24 feet and trailers up to 20 feet.  Access roads to the campground are not suited for larger vehicles.  Camp spots are reservable through www.recreation.gov.  The campground does not have RV hookups however, an RV dump station is available.  Most camp spots have a shade awning.  Restrooms and drinking water are available.  Be bear and mountain lion aware when visiting this park.  Please secure all food.  Pets are prohibited on trails and in the back country.  The campground is not located near the Rio Grand River and does not have access from this location.
