Dark Canyon Campground is a seasonal tent and RV campground.  Only very small RV's can be accommodated, up to 20 feet.  The road to the campground is long, narrow, and winding.  It's not suited for a large RV.  The campground is located in a forested area with a stream nearby.  The trees are very large and old(please see the photos tab above).  The campground is open from mid-May to September  The campground is located at 5,500 feet so snow chains may be necessary at times.  Most RV spots are 18 feet.  Double parking camp spots are available.  All camp spots have large shade trees, a fire ring, and a picnic table.  Drinking water and restrooms are also available.  It's a very peaceful location.  First-come, First-served camp spots are available.

Note:  Burning wood in the fire ring is not allowed at times due to the California drought.  Please check with the local ranger for current conditions.  Only propane burners may be allowed.

Note2:  The North Fork of the San Jacinto River (next to campground), is closed to public access by the Forest Service in order to protect the mountain yellow-legged frog.

Reservations are available at ReserveAmerica.com.  Additional campground information is available at Recreation.gov.  The US Forest Service official site.

Local Recreation:

The most popular activity from this campground is hiking.  There is an extensive trail system in the area.  It's a bueatiful place to hike with large pine trees and enormous granite mountains.

Road touring by motorcycle or car is also popular from this camp spot.  Highway 243 runs past the campground and is a very scenic drive.  The small town of Idyllwild is just 10 miles to the southeast on highway 243.  For a larger road tour, take a large loop around Mount San Jacinto and pass through Palm Springs on the northern side of the loop.  It's approximately a 100 mile loop.

Lake Fulmor is just eight miles to the Northwest of the campground.  The lake is right on highway 243 and it's a great spot to spend the day.
