Description

California, Upper San Juan Campground, Cleveland National Forest.

Direction:

Located Adjacent to the Ortega Highway (Highway 74), 21 miles east of San Juan Capistrano and 9 miles west of Lake Elsinore.  The campground does not have an address however, the Campbase map provided here is accurate for the location of the campground.

Comment

Upper San Juan Campground has 15 RV and tent camp spots.  This is primitive camping.  No electric, No dump station, Limited cellular service.  Its a nice campground however, campbase recommends RV's no larger than 20 feet.  Small RV's only.  The camp parking pads are small and campground roads are difficult to navigate with larger vehicles.  All camp spots are shaded by large oak trees.

The campground is at 1,800 feet.

Note:  The campground was closes during the Campbase visit in February 2015 due to a large amount of trees blown down in the campground, please see the pictures tab.  Campbase is uncertain when the campground will reopen.

Note Two:  Ortega Highway runs past the campground.  Use caution when entering or exiting the roadway.  Many motorcycles and vehicles travel extremely fast in this area.

Use caution, this is a Mountain Lion area.

Local Recreation:

Twenty miles to the south of the campground is San Juan Capistrano and the San Juan Mission.  The mission is in the downtown area and is a great spot for sightseeing and restaurants.

Dana Point Marina and the beach are 25 miles to the south of the campground.
