Description

California, Ocotillo Wells SVRA.   Ocotillo Wells is a desert state vehicle recreation area.  Vehicle off-roading is allowed.  This is a large off-roading area with numerous points of entrance.  The area is accessible by freeway on the east side or by mountain roads from the west side of the park.

Directions from Orange/Riverside/Los Angeles Counties:

From I-15 South, take Exit that says "Hwy 79 East" in Temecula, turn left, past through Warner Springs until S2, turn left on S2.  Stay on S2 for approximately 17 miles until the junction of Hwy 78, turn left.  It is 22 miles to Ocotillo Wells.  Look for the Ocotillo Wells visitors center signs.  This route requires mountain and single lane highway driving.  Possibly not well suited for large vehicles.

Another all freeway route is Interstate-10 past Palm Springs.  Eastbound on Interstate-10 take Highway 86 south toward the Salten sea.  When you reach Salten City, take South Marina Drive and go west(Right).  South Marina Drive quickly turns into the Borrego Salten Sea Way.  Within 3 miles look for the entrance to Ocotillo Wells on the left side of the highway.   This is the best route for Big Rigs.

Note: The address used here is for the Ocotillo Wells Visitors Center.  A good entry point into the recreation area is approximately one mile east of the Visitors Center at the Main Street entrance.

Comment

Ocotillo Wells SVRA is located in a remote desert area west of the Salten Sea.  Most off-roading and camping occurs during the winter months when the weather is mild.  Summer tempratures are into the 100's  and not suited for camping or off roading.  In general, there is no shade in this area.  Camp spots are where ever you park it.  Just select a location that's level and away from, the dusty main trails.  There are picnic tables and fire rings in some areas but only a few are available.

No fees are collected for camping or day use. It's generally open camping throughout the SVRA for up to 30 days per calendar year.  Reservations are not required.  Vault toilets, showers, shade ramadas, picnic tables, and fire rings are located in the Quarry, Main Street, and Holmes Camp areas. Water is not available. Vehicle repair shops, telephones, groceries, a motel and restaurant is available in the neighboring small town of Ocotillo Wells and along Highway 78 where it borders the park.

Fuel is scarce in the area near the park.  It can be found in downtown Borrego springs approximately 25 miles(depending on what section of the park you are in) from the SVRA.  Fuel is also available in Salten City at the Arco station on the corner of Highway 86 and South Marina Drive.  This might be the closest option.

RV water filling stations are NOT available in the park however, in the small town of Ocotillo Wells on Split Mountain road there is a free private water fill station.  It's at the Split Mountain RV park and Store.  There is also a small market at Split Mountain and another at the Ironwoods Motel and RV Park.  The one at Ironwoods Campground is near the Main Street entrance to the SVRA.

Dump stations are NOT available in the park.  A dump station is available on the south side of the SVRA at the Blu In Park on highway 78.  It's $35 to dump there.  Another dump station is available approximately 25 miles away at the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground in Anza Borrego State Park.  It's about a mile from downtown Borrego Springs.  $8 per dump at the Campground.  RV water is also available at both locations.

Most cell phones have service in the area.

Pay showers are available in Holmes Camp and at the Main Street entrance on the south side.

There are shade shelters and restrooms in Hidden Valley and at the Main Street entrance.

Here is a State Park Map of the area.  Note the RED hashed area where camping is not allowed.

All off road equipment is required to have a whip antenna and flag.  Helmets are also required for all riders.

On the South side of Ocotillo Wells SVRA is the small town of Ocotillo Wells.  In and around the town are several campgrounds that have full hookups, dump stations, and RV drinking water.  Most RV campers spend a few days in the SVRA and then a night or two in the local RV campgrounds to replenish water and dump.  Below are some links to the nearest RV campgrounds.
