California, Portuguese Joe Campground

Directions:

From downtown Long Pine on highway 395 take Whitney Portal Road Northbound out of town.  After approximately one mile take a left turn onto Washington Street.  In just a few blocks the campground sign and entrance will be on the right side.

Portuguese Joe Campground has 20 RV and tent camp spots.  Rv's up to 30 feet can be accommodated.  There is an automated pay station at the park.  Early reservations are available on reserveamerica.com.  Cellular service in the park is good for most carriers.  Downtown Lone Pine is just a mile from the campground.  A small stream runs through the center of the campground.  Its a good inexpensive campground and good when visiting the area.  Camping at this location is primitive.

Local Activities:

Diaz Lake.  The lake has a small launch ramp and fishing available.  Mostly a fishing and kayaking lake.  Swimming is allowed.

Alabama Hills Recreation area is located near this park.

Mount Whitney is located approximately 15 miles from the park.  Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the continental United States.

Alabama Hills Cafe and Bakery.  Campbase had breakfast at the cafe and we recommend it.  Great breakfast and large portions.  Its located in downtown Lone Pine near the corner of Highway-395 and Whitney Portal Road.

Lone Pine Smokehouse.  We saved this one for our next visit but, it looks good.

The Pizza Factory is located in downtown Lone Pine.
